Employment

The Pratt County Sheriff's Office Employs both Certified and Non Certified people in areas within our office.  If hired for a certified position and you are not certified then you must attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson, Kansas in the next available class after hire.  

We offer to all our employees single or family insurance through Pratt County.  Premiums are paid by Pratt County, but employees pay half the dental insurance.  Employees are also enrolled into the Kansas Public Retirement System.  Due to the sensitive nature of our business Criminal background checks and drug testing is mandatory.  The Pratt County Sheriff's Office only considers applicants who have a criminal free background.  We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Career Opportunity/Detention Officer

 

ARE you interested in starting a career in Law Enforcement? Pratt County is accepting applications for a Detention Officer for the Pratt County Sheriff's Office. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, no criminal record and a valid driver's license. The Detention Officer is responsible for all activities of inmates. Pratt County offers health insurance, retirement plan, vacation and sick leave. PRATT COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants will make a minimum of three trips to Pratt for the selection process.  Scheduling parameters are applied to all applicants equally, and all applicants must be prepared to personally appear at all phases of the hiring process outlined below.

  1. Written Test: The test consist of questions on basic computer skills, spelling, math, typing, as well as general questions relating to Pratt County and the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office. A passing score of 70% is required.  Applicants will not move forward in the selection process if they fail to get a minimum score of 70%

     

  2. PHYSICAL TEST: The test is based on the Cooper Institute Standards.  Applicants falling below the required score on this test will not move forward in the selection process. Applicants for patrol positions will also be given a basic qualification firearms test following the physical.  Applicants will use their firearm, holsters, and ammunition for this test.  Passing score is 70%.  Applicants falling below 70% will not continue in the selection process.

     

  3. ORAL INTERVIEW BOARD: The oral interview is conducted by members of this office from the jail and patrol staff.  Applicants will be ranked based on their responses to a list of standardized questions, including problem solving.  Conditional offers will be made following the oral interview.

     

  4. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Applicants who are given conditional offers following the oral interview will be given a personal history packet that must be returned to the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office within five days of the conditional offer.  When the packet is received we will conduct a background investigation.  Applicants will be fingerprinted and checked locally and with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  A list of disqualifiers will be given with this packet.

  5. PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS: Applicants with a successful background will be scheduled for Psychological tests at this time.  Applicants failing these tests will not move forward in the selection process.  

  6. INTERVIEW WITH THE SHERIFF: Applicants who have passed all tests and background checks will be scheduled for a final interview with the Sheriff.  Appointments as Detention Officers and Patrol Officers are solely at the discretion of the Sheriff.

REASONS FOR DISQUALIFICATION

Felonies- I have been convicted of a felony.

Misdemeanors- I have been convicted of a non-traffic misdemeanor that resulted in a possible jail sentence of 6 months or more in the past 15 years

I have committed a crime of moral offense. (window peeking, patronizing a prostitute, or lewd and lascivious behavior)

I have been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense.

I have had my state certification as a Law Enforcement Officer denied/revoked/surrendered or suspended.

I have resigned from ANY employment as part of an agreement to avoid further investigation or prosecution.

Driving record- I have been convicted of a DUI

I have had 3 or more citations within any 18 month period within the past three years.

I have had three or more chargeable or at fault accidents within the past three years.

I have had my driver’s license suspended or revoked due to a conviction within the past three years.

Parole/Probation- I have been placed on parole, probation, or diversion.

Narcotics/Controlled Substance- I have used illegal drugs.

Military Discharge/Conduct- I have been discharged from the military dishonorably, or convicted of a military crime in the past 15 years that resulted in a jail sentence of 6 months or more.

Thefts-I have been convicted of misdemeanor or felony theft.

Background-I have a work history, educational history, military service history, general reputation, or interpersonal relationship that would prevent me from becoming a law enforcement officer.

ALL APPLICANTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A COPY OF THIS DOCUMENT AT THE TIME OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND IT MUST BE SIGNED BY THE APPLICANT PRIOR TO TESTING.
